Replacing boilers with heat pumps | Decarbonisation project
In order to contribute to the energy transition, the Poste Italiane Group launched a decarbonisation project consisting of the removal of gas boilers and the installation of heat pumps on sites distributed throughout the country. In particular, the decarbonisation project aims to replace gas/diesel/LPG boilers with heat pumps, ensuring that the building’s CO2 emissions are reduced to zero through the use of certified 100% green electricity. The plants to be replaced were identified by giving priority to those that were older and therefore less efficient in terms of operation and consumption. This will result in lower energy costs due to the elimination of gas systems and their replacement by more efficient electricity systems. By 2025, the project had reduced emissions by 9,700 tCO2e230. Furthermore, the projected emission reduction in 2026 is 10,400 tCO2e.In order to contribute to the energy transition, the Poste Italiane Group launched a decarbonisation project consisting of the removal of gas boilers and the installation of heat pumps on sites distributed throughout the country. Furthermore, in line with the climate strategy defined in the 2024-2028 “The Connecting Platform” Strategic Plan, the Group continues to implement the following actions aimed at the overall reduction of its emissions:
Installation of charging stations for electric vehicles
In order to encourage the use of eco-sustainable mobility solutions, in addition to what has already been envisaged under the Transition Plan, the Group has implemented various initiatives aimed at encouraging the use of electric vehicles, including through the installation, at Poste Italiane’s premises or in areas made available by municipalities, of recharging stations reserved for employees, citizens and suppliers.
In particular:
- it is planned to install 200 electric vehicle recharging stations by 2026 not only in use by the Poste Italiane Group but also by external suppliers, within the car parks of its own buildings;
- with reference to the Polis project, in particular, under the line of action related to the creation of the One-stop shop for citizens in municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants, the installation of publicly accessible electric vehicle charging columns planned in the vicinity of Post Offices both in private Poste Italiane car parks and in adjacent public parking areas;
- to promote environmentally sustainable mobility, electric vehicle charging stations are being installed for employees
Air Fleet Initiatives
With respect to the air fleet, another of the aircraft in the Poste Air Cargo fleet was replaced in 2025. Three of the six 737-400 type aircraft have so far been replaced by more modern and efficient ones, in order to achieve a reduction in hourly fuel consumption. The Poste Italiane Group’s commitment to reducing air transport emissions also continues, as the modernisation of the remaining 737-400 aircraft in its fleet has already been assessed and is being planned for the near future.
In addition, in order to reduce CO2 emissions from fuel consumption associated with the aviation fleet, a reduction in tankering has been envisaged.
Proximity network - The “Green Delivery” model
The Poste Italiane Group has implemented a sustainable delivery model, the “Green Delivery” model, which reduces environmental impact through logistical optimisation, a solution that benefits both the environment and citizens:
- CO2 emissions are limited by delivering several shipments at a single pick-up point, instead of delivering a parcel to each individual recipient, thus reducing transport and avoiding a second pass in case the recipient is absent;
- citizens benefit from greater flexibility, in line with changing lifestyles: instead of waiting for parcels at home, people have over 32,000 proximity points in the Post Office network and the Punto Poste network (tobacconists, bars, stationers, newsagents, shops, Carrefour, lockers).
In the course of 2025, the Punto Poste network will be further enriched with 1,260 new locker points, which, thanks to their capillarity and technology, will further improve the quality of services in support of eCommerce, making parcel delivery and collection operations easier and more convenient for online shoppers.
For 2026, Poste Italiane has additional measures to further increase the number of locker points across the country.
Green Logistics - Development of green corridors in end-to-end logic
In order to develop customised solutions for Top Clients, aimed at guaranteeing an integrated and completely carbon-free logistic-distribution network, from real estate infrastructure to transport and delivery, the Group has initiated the development of “Green Corridors”, low-emission logistic routes based on micro warehouses close to the recipients and electric vehicles for pick up and last mile. In 2025, the Poste Italiane Group piloted a first active corridor covering the entire E2E chain: from pick-up at the San Salvo warehouse to the delivery of same-day products in the Naples area, including the city and province. Further corridors are being studied, also in view of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics.
Green Logistics - “Cargo e-bike” and “Self-driving vehicles” solution trials
The evolution of urban regulations - from the introduction of Zero Emission Zones (ZEVs) to the extension of LTZs and the spread of municipal microhubs - represents an opportunity to rethink delivery models in line with new last-mile governance policies, geared towards reducing pollution, containing traffic and improving urban decency.
In this context, the following have been developed in the field of urban logistics:
- lightweight vehicles (cargo e-bikes) designed to increase operational efficiency through greater loading capacity than conventional bikes, innovative solutions for compartment management, higher safety standards, energy recovery and a modular and interactive approach supported by dedicated sensors;
- a prototype self-driving vehicle, BOXì, designed to enable new alternative delivery models and to support logistics operations in the final stages of delivery.
Photovoltaic project
The photovoltaic project involves the self-production of energy from renewable sources that can be used by the Group through its own photovoltaic plants. The project to install photovoltaic systems involves the roofs of owned sites located throughout the country, with a target of installing more than 1,300 systems by 2026, with an expected production of more than 40 GWh/year, of which about 30% is related to logistics sites. Currently, more than 850 systems with a theoretical maximum capacity of around 29 MWp have been installed. In 2025, a potential of approximately 35 GWh of annual production was reached.
Smart Building
In order to achieve savings of around 17 GWh by 2027, the Poste Italiane Group has launched a smart building management project through the installation of sensors in buildings distributed throughout Italy. The Smart Building project is key for the management of the Poste Italiane Group’s buildings, as it takes the form of the creation and progressive extension of a large and widespread network of post offices and logistics and production buildings, managed through a Building and Energy Management System (BEMS), which provides for the integrated management and control of systems, the optimisation of consumption and maintenance activities through a dashboard that is constantly evolving and optimising, thus achieving a reduction in consumption in terms of electrical energy estimated at around 15% on average, as well as improved management of environmental comfort. In 2025, the savings achieved through the project amount to 10.5 GWh.
LED project
Building on the work begun in previous financial years, the Poste Italiane Group has completed its “LED” initiative, which aimed to replace the fluorescent lighting fixtures in Poste Italiane’s operational premises with LED lighting fixtures. This has reduced electricity consumption for lighting and led to savings in maintenance costs due to the longer lifespan of the new fixtures.
Electricity procurement with Guarantees of Origin (GO)
Regarding the procurement of electricity, the Group continued, also in 2025, with the purchase of 100% electricity from certified renewable sources with 100% Guarantees of Origin. In 2025, electricity from renewable sources used by the Poste Italiane Group is 99.6%2.
Poste Energia offer
Moreover, within the “Poste Energia” offer, the Group stands out for its focus on environmental sustainability, promoting conscious consumption practices and offering electricity from 100% renewable sources produced in Italy, certified with a Guarantee of Origin, and methane gas released for consumption that is fully offset. Further details on offsetting GHG emissions through the purchase of carbon credits by PostePay can be found in the sections on Disclosure Requirements E1-7 and E1-8.
1. The value refers to the tCO2e reduction resulting from the volume of gas that the boilers eliminated during 2025 would have consumed.
2. The share of energy used by the Group from non-renewable sources (0.4%) relates to buildings located on minor islands and an insignificant share of rented buildings.
